Home School Info Spring Term

Welcome back to Term 3 & 4 This term will be full of fun, learning and brand new experiences!

Topics

Due to only have a small amount of time with the Hedgehogs this term, our topic for the first weeks back will be 'Plants', as this will finish off last term's topic of 'Predators'. During this shorter strand we will be exploring: what plants need in order to survive, carrying out our own plant investigations, looking at how water is transported in a plant and the life cycle of a plant including pollination, seed formation and dispersal.

As you are all aware, I am due to start my maternity leave this term, Mr Hancock will be taking over from me from Monday 29th January with his own topic for the children to progress further with.

Maths

Maths will be a permanent fixture to our routine, taking place every morning. As a school, we have now started to develop 'Learning Journeys' with the children. This involves taking a difficult learning objective from the curriculum and using it as an end goal for the week. This objective is broken down into bite size chunks over the course of a week so that children can learn the fundamental skills needed to ultimately accomplish a harder task, we refer to these as  'Chunky Monkeys'. In every lesson, I will be explaining to the children how each days objective can be broken down into 3 types of activity: 'I Know', 'I Can' and 'I Can Prove'. The latter allows the children to attempt deeper mastery of the objective. The children will also have the opportunity to assess their own understanding at the end of each lesson. I have provided some examples of my planning, which will be stuck into the children's books at the beginning of each week.

This term the areas we will be studying are:

Mrs Hill will be helping me to provide differentiated support to children in every lesson, and this may well include taking groups out of the classroom for more focused learning.

English

We will be continuing to practise our writing skills within the following text types:

  • Poetry
  • Diary Entries

We will also remain focused on SPaG/GPS and carrying out varied sessions of grammar, punctuation and spelling throughout each week in isolation.

The children have now all been given a spelling book. This will go home on a Monday and will need to come back the following Monday to complete the test; there is no need to bring the book back in during the week, unless your child wishes to practise during break times. We have been encouraging children to copy down their new spellings, please do take a moment to check these at home, incase I don't pick up on any mistakes whilst in class. In addition, we also go through how to spell the words as a whole class as they self mark themselves. If you happen to notice any incorrectly marked spellings, please do feel free to amend.

The children have now also been split into two groups: Group 1 and Group 2. Group 1 children will remain focused on the 200 High Frequency words (featured below) which are common words used in everyday writing. Group 2 will need to learn a list of words from the Year 3/4 statutory spelling list from the curriculum.  These words can be found on the Hedgehog Homework Page.

PE

This term we will be having tennis sessions with Adam on a Wednesday afternoon. Sessions with Mr Thacker will continue in terms 4,5 and 6.

Mrs Tanner

Mrs Tanner will be providing PPA cover on a Wednesday morning this term, and will be keeping the routine of covering Maths and English, however these sessions will be independent from the rest of the week's learning. Mrs Tanner will be focusing on the geometry and measures sections of the maths curriculum and SPaG / guided reading during English (with a particular emphasis on phonics).

As you are all aware, I am expecting my first child and am due to start my maternity leave this term. To keep you all informed, I will be in Hedgehog class for the first 3 weeks of the term, my last day being Friday 26th January. Mr Hancock will then be taking over on Monday 29th January with his own topic / maths / literacy planning. There will be a thorough hand over where each child will be discussed in depth. Mr Hancock will also have an opportunity to get to know the children on Friday 19th January before starting his official time at Leigh. I would personally like to thank all of you that have been so incredibly supportive of me over the last couple of terms, I have thoroughly enjoyed my move to year 3/4 and the children have been utterly fantastic! I hope they continue to work as hard as they have for me and that they enjoy the rest of the year in Hedgehog Class!

Looking forward to seeing you soon!

Mrs Harper
