Ypres - June 2018

We are excited to announce that we are taking the whole of Key Stage 2 (Years 3-6) to Ypres in Belgium to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. This event will be a fantastic opportunity for the children to learn about this incredibly important historical event and promises to be an experience they will never forget. Links will be created within our creative curriculum and various community and classroom events will take place in the lead-up to ensure the children appreciate the importance of the places they will be visiting.

The city of Ypres, at the heart of the Salient, was involved early in the First World War. The British were associated with Ypres throughout the war, and involved in all four battles which bear the name of the town. During the war, the town was almost constantly under bombardment, and was reduced to ruins. The landscape of the region today still tells this story as it contains many monuments and cemeteries which have great historical significance for the people of many nations. I am aware that many of you have yourselves visited Ypres and will know exactly how important it still is to those who wish to pay their respects to the men and women who lost their lives in the conflict.

We are advising that all children have an EHIC Card when they travel. These are FREE and you can apply for one by clicking here.

The date of our visit will be Friday 15th June 2018. We will be leaving school at 6am and then returning at 10.30pm. During the day we will be visiting the Tyne Cot British Cemetery and Memorial, The Passchendaele Museum and Dugout Experience and The Menin Gate. Further details will be sent out nearer the time but we hope this range of visits and experiences will ensure a fascinating and unforgettable experience.
